Boston archdiocese asks court to end vigil at closed parish church
May 06, 2015
The Archdiocese of Boston has brought trespassing charges against members of a group that has kept vigil in a closed parish church building for more than 10 years.
The “Friends of St. Frances Cabrini” protested the decision to close their parish in the town of Scituate. But the group’s canonical petitions have been rejected by the Vatican. A Norfolk County court is now hearing arguments on whether the group’s continued occupation of the church constitutes trespassing.
The Boston archdiocese argues it still owns the church building, and reports that the archdiocese has spent more than $85,000 each year for repairs and utilities, while the protesters have occupied it.
