Polish, German bishops recall anniversary of Dachau liberation
May 06, 2015
The presidents of the German and Polish episcopates, joined by other bishops and priests, offered Mass at Dachau to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the concentration camp’s liberation on April 29.
2,579 Catholic priests, seminarians, and religious were deported from across Europe to the Dachau concentration camp, according to a French book published earlier this year. 1,034 of them, 868 of whom were Polish, died there.
“Unlike at Auschwitz, where much still remains, there’s now hardly any trace of Dachau at all,” a spokesman for the Polish bishops told Catholic News Service. “It’s as if history itself has been erased there.”
