Pope calls for Christian solidarity in the face of unemployment, other social problems

May 04, 2015

Speaking to pilgrims from the Italian diocese of Isernia-Venafro, which he visited last July, Pope Francis called for Christian solidarity in the face of youth unemployment and other chronic problems.

Stating that “problems are overcome with solidarity,” Pope Francis called for “Christian hope, founded on the resurrected Christ, and accompanied by a large charitable effort towards those most in need,” during the May 2 audience.

Because “work gives dignity,” Christians should look to find jobs, even “little” ones, for youth, he said.

The Pontiff also expressed hope that the upcoming jubilee of mercy will promote a “vigorous missionary spirit” in parishes.

“Every parish is called to be a privileged place of listening and of the proclamation of the Gospel, a house of prayer gathered around the Eucharist, a true school of communion, where the ardor of charity prevails over the temptation of a superficial and dry religiosity,” he said.
