Cardinal Mamberti receives additional appointment

April 28, 2015

Pope Francis has named Cardinal Dominque Mamberti, the prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura, as the president of the Commission of Advocates.

Cardinal Mamberti, who remains the Apostolic Signatura’s prefect, succeeds Cardinal Raymond Burke as commission president.

According to Pastor Bonus, the apostolic constitution that outlines the responsibilities of the different offices of the Roman Curia, the Commission of Advocates recommends to the Vatican’s Secretary of State the names of canonists who are qualified to take part in cases before the Apostolic Signatura and to who are qualified to assist bishops in legal dealings with other curial offices.

Cardinal Mamberti’s new appointment, which is not unexpected, comes five months after his appointment as prefect. In 2008, Cardinal Burke’s appointment as commission president came five months after his own appointment as prefect.
