Anniversary of St. John Paul’s canonization recalled

Cardinal Angelo Sodano, dean of the College of Cardinals and St. John Paul II’s secretary of state during the latter portion of his pontificate, was the principal celebrant at an April 27 Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica that commemorated the first anniversary of the Pontiff’s canonization.

Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz of Kraków, who served as St. John Paul’s secretary, preached the homily. He said that holiness was the overarching theme of the pontificate and that St. John Paul’s three primary spiritual and pastoral initiatives concerned divine mercy, the family, and youth.
