President Obama welcomes Pope’s ‘expression of views’ on Armenian genocide

April 24, 2015

A century after the beginning of the Armenian genocide, President Barack Obama issued a statement noting that “the Armenian people of the Ottoman Empire were deported, massacred, and marched to their deaths.”

“Amid horrific violence that saw suffering on all sides, one and a half million Armenians perished,” he added. “We welcome the expression of views by Pope Francis, Turkish and Armenian historians, and the many others who have sought to shed light on this dark chapter of history.”

The Armenian National Committee of America criticized the president for not using the word “genocide” in his statement.

Of course Obama didn't use the word "genocide" in his statement. That might have given offense to the Turks. And giving offense is the last thing our exceedingly brave and strong President wants to do.
