Jihadists hope to stir Muslim-Christian divisions in Kenya, Islamic leader warns

April 20, 2015

The jihadist warriors of Al Shabaab are hoping “to spark a religious conflict in Kenya between Christians and Muslims,” a Kenyan Muslim leader told an audience in Nairobi.

Al Shabaab, a terrorist group that is most active in Somalia, has claimed responsibility for a series of attacks inside Kenya in recent months. Sheikh Mohammed Shakuul, who heads an Islamic community in the Nairobi neighborhood of Eastleigh—informally known as “Little Mogadish” because of its heavy Somali population—told a conference of religious leaders that the attacks are designed to create divisions among religious groups.

“We have lived together in harmony for many years,” the Islamic leader said. “Kenyans of different faiths should not fall into that trap.”
