Pope decries economic inequity in the Americas

April 13, 2015

In a message to the Summit of the Americas, which brought together leaders of 35 North and South American leaders, Pope Francis decried unjust economic disparities.

“Inequity, the unjust distribution of wealth, and resources, is a source of conflict and violence among peoples,” he said in his April 10 message to the president of Panama, the summit’s host nation.

No one should be excluded from “‘basic goods’ such as land, labor, and home, and ‘public services’ such as health, education, security, the environment,” the Pope added.

“It is not enough to expect the poor to gather crumbs that fall from the tables of the rich,” he continued, as he called upon heads of state to focus on the plight of the disadvantaged. The Pope also called for attention to immigrants, who in seeking a better life become “easy prey” for human traffickers.
