At UN, Vatican envoy laments lack of progress toward nuclear disarmament

April 10, 2015

In an April 9 address to a UN session on nuclear weapons, Archbishop Bernardito Auza reminded world leaders that “the Holy See has not ceased to raise the moral argument against the possession and use of nuclear weapons.”

Tracing the history of Vatican statements on nuclear weaponry, the Vatican’s representative noted the progress that has been made in international efforts toward disarmament, but observed that that progress is now jeopardized by the lack of movement toward worldwide acceptance of the non-proliferation treaty. Countries that possess nuclear weapons have added to their stockpiles, he said, while other countries have worked toward developing a nuclear capability. “What is even more terrifying,” the archbishop observed, “is the possibility that non-state actors, like terrorist and extremist organizations, will acquire nuclear weapons.”
