Philippine president invites cardinals to study peace deal with separatists

April 07, 2015

Philippine President Benigno Aquino III has invited three prelates, including Cardinals Luis Antonio Tagle and Orlando Quevedo, to join an advisory council that will evaluate the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL), a draft treaty submitted to the Philippine legislature in 2014.

The BBL, negotiated by the Aquino government and Muslim separatists, would grant greater autonomy to part of the island of Mindanao. Support for the BBL has declined significantly following a clash between police and Muslim separatists in January.

So lets have a BBL for parts of Paris, London, Detroit, Kenya, Nigeria, etc. Why not the south Bronx? Then let's see what happens when it's tried in Beijing or Moscow. Or, for real fun, why not try the reverse - try freedom of religion in a part of Saudi Arabia, or Indonesia, or Pakistan? In the words of Van Gough's surrender, "Can't we just get along?"
