Philippines: head of bishops' conference reacts to poll showing public support for legal divorce
March 31, 2015
Responding to a poll that showed 60% of the people in the Philippines favoring legal divorce, the president of the country’s episcopal conference has restated the Church’s opposition.
Archbishop Socrates Villegas of Lingayen-Dagupan observed that existing laws provide protection for abused or abandoned spouses. Divorce, he said, has the effect of “compounding the trauma,” especially for children.
Legislators in the Philippines are preparing to debate a proposal that would end the country’s status as the only nation that does not recognize legal divorce.
