Benedict XVI no longer writing on theology, Archbishop Gänswein reports

March 24, 2015

Pope-emeritus Benedict XVI no longer has the physical strength to tackle new writing projects, his longtime personal secretary has disclosed.

Archbishop Georg Gänswein told the Italian magazine Oggi that with the publication of the 3-volume work Jesus of Nazareth, which he completed during his pontificate, Benedict has "concluded his theological work." The archbishop said that the retired Pontiff remains mentally alert, and shows a "great memory," but does not have the stamina for extended work sessions.

Benedict XVI continues to maintain a regular daily schedule, saying early Mass and preaching a homily-- "without notes"-- on Sundays, Archbishop Gänswein reported. The retired Pontiff reads, answers correspondences, and prays, often playing the piano in the evening, he said. Benedict also takes regular walks around the Vatican gardens, although he is now using a walker on the advice of his doctor.

Now if the faithful will just set about reading what our brilliant, beloved BXVI has spent his life writing for us. What a treasure he's left us! I still pray for his intentions daily, along with those of Pope Francis.

God bless him! His gifts will live on. He has worked hard all his life to learn and to teach and we have been the beneficiaries.

A major loss to the intellectual progress of the human species and to the spiritual development of Catholics.

I knew it was coming, but that doesn't mean I was prepared for it. I have so enjoyed reading Papa Benedict's work. It is incredibly enlightening without being burdensome to read. Thanks, Papa Benedetto.
