Cardinal Parolin: the Church must be free to preach the Gospel

March 19, 2015

In an address marking the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Romania and the Holy See, the Vatican’s Secretary of State emphasized the importance of religious freedom, including the Church’s freedom to preach the Gospel.

Religious freedom has “individual and community aspects, private and public, closely linked,” Cardinal Pietro Parolin said on March 18. “The liberty of the Church is a fundamental principle in relations between the Church and the juridic order of civil society.”

Warning against individualist and collectivist ideologies, the prelate also highlighted the Holy See’s promotion of peace and human rights and its work against poverty.
