Australian archbishop, charged with cover-up of abuse, steps down from bishops' board
March 18, 2015
Archbishop Philip Wilson of Adelaide, who faces criminal charges for an alleged failure to report sexual abuse, has resigned from the Australian bishops’ committee responding to the sex-abuse crisis.
Archbishop Wilson stepped down from his post with the Truth Justice and Healing Council, as well as his position as vice-president of the Australian bishops’ conference. He had already taken a leave of absence from his ordinary pastoral duties.
Archbishop Wilson has said that he is innocent of the charge—which involves a incident that occurred nearly 40 years ago—and will defend himself vigorously against the accusation.
