Bishop condemns killing of priest, persistent violence in Democratic Republic of Congo

March 17, 2015

Bishop Theophile Kaboy Ruboneka of Goma, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, has condemned the killing of a Catholic priest there as an “abominable, abhorrent, and infernal act.”

In a letter to the apostolic nuncio, Bishop Ruboneka decried that the February 25 murder of Father Jean-Paul Kakule, and pointed to a pattern to violence against the Church in the African country. Since 1992, ten priests have been killed in the Democratic Republic of the Congo; five women religious who disappeared in 1996 have never been accounted for.

It has not been determined whether the murder of Father Kakule was motivated by religious hatred or simple criminal intent. Bishop Ruboneka said that the widespread violence in the country has made ordinary citizens insecure. “Criminal gangs can go about their evil business unhindered because there is no police presence,” he wrote.
