Cardinal Tagle: no single answer on Communion for divorced/remarried

March 17, 2015

Cardinal Luis Tagle of Manila has said that the Church “cannot give one formula” on whether Catholics who are divorced and remarried should receive Communion.

“Every situation for those who are divorced and remarried is quite unique,” the cardinal told the Catholic Herald. “To have a general rule might be counterproductive in the end.”

Cardinal Tagle said that rather than looking for a Yes or No answer, the Church should seek ways of “addressing each case individually.”

It is this kind of wishy-washy attitude that we have same sex marriage. Either you can or you cannot. Everyone wants their cake and eat too. Time to stand up. Tell the people what they are doing wrong.

A couple of points about the source article: (1) Was the cardinal conducting an official public function in civilian clothes? (2) He advised that an evangelizer must first "experience" Christ himself before being capable of evangelizing. I suppose that charismatics need the existential more than regular Catholics do. Returning to the topic at hand, is the marriage tribunal capable of rendering sound judgment in annulment cases? If so, then the "remarried" must live chaste and free of scandal.

What is the Cardinal talking about? Every situation "is quite unique"? If the first marriage was valid (that, of course, is critical), and if the first spouse is still living, isn't any new union an adulterous union?

Well, that's pretty much the essential definition of the "penitential process", isn't it ?

Your Eminence, here's the formula: a person who has been married in the Church and who divorces and attempts another marriage is in an objective state of mortal sin and may not receive Holy Communion. There might be several possible ways to resolve the matter and the proper solution will be appropriate to the particular situation, but you must start with that one formula. You are only adding to the confusion by failing to make that point strongly when speaking on this issue.
