St. Louis appearance by Medjugorje 'seer' cancelled at Vatican request

March 13, 2015

A scheduled appearance in St. Louis, Missouri, by one of the “seers” of Medjugorje has been cancelled, at the request of the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

Ivan Dragicevic, one of several people who claim to have experienced visions of the Virgin Mary for years at Medjugorje, was scheduled to speak in St. Louis on March 18. But the event was cancelled without explanation by the sponsors.

Now Archbishop Robert Carlson of St. Louis has released a statement, saying:

I have received a request from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith to remind everyone that they are not to participate in events that promote the so-called visionries of Medjugorje and in particular Mr. Ivan Dragicevic. Please make this information available to the Lay Faithful.

Controversy over the authenticity of the claimed apparitions at Medjugorje has continued for years. In 2013, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith issued a directive that discouraged events or activities that would assume the apparitions were taking place. A special Vatican commission investigating the Medjugorje phenomenon has reportedly completed its work, but its conclusions have not been made public.

Comments made about Medjugorje often remind me of a scene from the film, Brideshead Revisited. Charles Ryder is reveling in Fr. Mackay's failed attempt to offer the Last Rites to Lord Marchmain. "Mumbo-jumbo's off; the Witch-doctor has gone!" Julia then says, "I can't quite see why you've taken it so much to heart that my father shall NOT have the last sacraments." Nor can I quite see why so many Catholics have taken it so much to heart that Our Lady should NOT be appearing to Ivan.

Excellent news. But it appears that the Vatican is hesitant to accuse the seers of fraud because of the next question--why did it take you so long to make this public? The longer it goes on, the greater the likelihood of hurting people who have mistakenly put their faith in these "visions" and "visionaries."
