Three officials of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, including the top two officials, are beginning a five-day visit to the Ivory Coast.
The West African nation is approximately 40% Muslim and 25% Catholic.
“The visit will offer the opportunity to promote and encourage interreligious dialogue in Ivory Coast, in a context of respect and friendship, in accordance with the teaching of Pope Francis,” according to a Vatican announcement. “With this objective, various meetings are scheduled with leaders of other religious traditions, especially of Islam and traditional African religions.”
Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, the pontifical council’s president, will meet with the nation’s president.
