St. Teresa's 'pilgrim staff' presented to Pontiff as 500th anniversary approaches

On March 11, Pope Francis was presented with a relic of the “pilgrim staff” that St. Teresa of Avila, a walking stick that was used by the Spanish mystic and came to symbolize her spiritual journey.

The pilgrim staff was presented to the Pontiff by members of the Carmelite order, which had taken the stick on a worldwide tour in preparation for the 500th anniversary of St. Teresa’s birth, which will take place on March 28.

During his regular weekly audience on March 11, Pope Francis mentioned the anniversary celebration and encouraged the faithful to be inspired by the example of St. Teresa. “May her spiritual vigor stimulate you, dear young people, to bear joyful witness to faith in your life; may her trust in Christ the Savior sustain you, dear sick people, in the moments of greatest discouragement; and may her tireless apostolate invite you, dear newlyweds, to place Christ at the center of your marital home.”
