Cardinal Edward Egan, retired Archbishop of New York, dead at 82

March 05, 2015

Cardinal Edward Egan, the retired Archbishop of New York, has died at the age of 82. His death was attributed to cardiac arrest.

A native of Illinois, Edward Egan was ordained as a priest of the Chicago archdiocese in 1957. He was appointed an auxiliary bishop of New York in 1985, and became Bishop of Bridgeport, Connecticut, in 1988. In 2000 he was named Archbishop of New York by St. John Paul II, who elevated him to the College of Cardinals a year later. He retired in 2009 at the age of 77.

With the death of Cardinal Egan there are now 226 living members of the College of Cardinals, of whom 125 are under the age of 80 and thus eligible to vote in a papal conclave.
