Cardinal Parolin to visit Belarus

March 04, 2015

Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s Secretary of State, will visit Belarus from March 12 to 15, according to a report from the Belarusian Telegraph Agency.

In sending Cardinal Parolin to visit Belarus at the invitation of the nation’s government, Pope Francis is “honoring the anguished history of Belarus and sharing its hopes for the future,” as well as noting “the country's role of being a meeting place for the parties to the dramatic conflict that has rocked the region,” the episcopal conference stated.

The Eastern European nation of 9.5 million, which borders both Russia and Ukraine, is 80% Eastern Orthodox and 14% Catholic.
