Pope reflects on Christ’s transfiguration

March 02, 2015

Pope Francis devoted his March 1 Angelus address to Christ’s transfiguration, the subject of the day’s Gospel reading at Mass.

The goal of the Lenten journey of conversion, the Pope said, is participation in the glory of Christ. In his transfiguration, which strengthened the apostles before his passion, “Jesus reveals Himself as the perfect icon of the Father and the fulfillment of revelation.”

The words from heaven addressed to the apostles, the Pope continued, are addressed to us as well: “listen to him.” Following Jesus involves entering the logic of the Paschal Mystery, making our lives a gift to others, “docile obedience to the will of God,” detachment from material things, and interior freedom.

The Pope concluded with a call to join Peter, James, and John in contemplating the face of Jesus. “We too can be transfigured by love,” the Pope said; “in reality love is capable of transfiguring everything.”
