India: bishops’ conference calls for action on religious toleration
February 20, 2015
A spokesman for the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India has welcomed a call for religious toleration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a member of the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party.
Modi “affirmed that all religions in India, whether majority or minority, have the same rights, and every individual has the freedom to profess and diffuse his or her beliefs,” Father Joseph Chinnayyan told the Fides news agency.
“We welcome these words, which are a message for all, including Hindu extremist groups,” he continued. “Now we are waiting to see action.”
