Cardinal Bertone, in interview, defends record, comments on Vatican policies

February 19, 2015

In a lengthy interview with the Huffington Post (!), Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the former Vatican Secretary of State, defends his record in that office and rebuts claims that he is now living in a luxurious apartment complex.

Cardinal Bertone says that he drew criticism because he was not a product of the Secretariat of State, and because his management decisions thwarted the ambitions of some Vatican officials. He also speaks about his role in negotiations with Cuba, his concern about papal security, and the struggle to reform the operations of the Vatican bank, the Institute for Religious Works. He confidently predicts that Pope Francis will not make any change in Church doctrine on marriage or any other matter.
