Pope will not repeat special Mass for Italian parliament members

February 13, 2015

Pope Francis celebrated a special Mass for Italian members of parliament last year, but he will not repeat the Mass this year, the ANSA news service reports.

About 500 lawmakers attended the Mass in St. Peter’s basilica last March 27. Msgr. Lorenzo Leussi, a chaplain to the Italian parliament, told ANSA that there were no plans for a similar ceremony. Msgr. Leussi did not indicate any reason for the Pope’s decision.

Some Italian politicians were taken aback by the severity of the Pope’s homily during the Mass; the Pontiff denounced officials who ignore the plight of the needy to feed their own ambitions, and said that for corrupt government leaders “there is no salvation.”
