Peruvian bishop: government must protect judges after death threats from drug gangs

January 27, 2015

A Peruvian bishop has called upon the government to provide protection for judges, the Fides news service reports, after several jurists received death threats from drug-trafficking cartels.

“Authorities and citizens cannot allow this,” said Bishop Angel Franciso Simon Piorno of Chimbote. “We are living in fear, and this should not happen.” He said that the government should provide personal protection for the judges who have been threatened, and seek out and punish those who made the threats.
