India's dalits reportedly leaving Christianity, returning to Hindu roots

January 14, 2015

In India there have been many reports recently that Christian dalits-- members of what was the lowest class, the “untouchables” in the old caste system—have left the faith, returning to their Hindu roots. The UCANews service reports that some have complained the Church did little to enhance their economic and social status.

Claims and counter-claims regarding the religious affiliations of dalits, and efforts to convert or “reconvert” members of the impoverished group, have caused controversy in India for years. Hindu-nationalist groups charge that Christian missionaries offer inducements for dalits to embrace their faith; missionaries reply that they are simply trying to help the poor.

During the past year, Hindu nationals have made their own efforts to reach dalits and have attracted attention to “reconversion” ceremonies, at which they have claimed that many have rejected Christianity.
