The Spirit routs fear, Pope tells congregation

January 09, 2015

Only the prompting of the Holy Spirit can enable the believer to see God as the Father, Pope Francis told the congregation at the Domus Sanctae Marthae at morning Mass on January 9.

“You can follow thousands of catechism courses, thousands of spirituality courses, thousands of yoga or zen courses, and all these things,” the Holy Father said. “But none of this will be able to give you the freedom as a child (of God). Only the Holy Spirit can prompt your heart to say ‘Father.’”

The Pope contrasted the gentle prompting of the Holy Spirit with the hardness of heart that blocks out the love of God. He said that hardness of heart stems from fear, while “in love there’s no fear.”
