Pope receives leader of Bosnia and Herzegovina

December 16, 2014

Pope Francis received Dragan Covic, the Croat member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, at the Apostolic Palace on December 15. Covic also met with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s Secretary of State, and Archbishop Dominique Mamberti, who is concluding his term as Secretary for Relations with States.

The Balkan nation of 3.6 million is 12% Catholic and is governed by a three-person presidency whose members include a Bosniak, a Croat, and a Serb.

The parties discussed the contribution of Catholics to the life of Bosnia and Herzegovina, especially “in the field of reconstruction following the devastation caused by floods last spring,” according to the Holy See Press Office.

“Satisfaction was expressed regarding the good bilateral relations, and several issues were discussed in relation to the application of the 2006 Basic Agreement,” the press office added.
