Italian prime minister meets with Pope

December 15, 2014

Pope Francis met with Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi on December 13.

The Pontiff and the 39-year-old leader, who has been in office since February, discussed “the current context of persistent difficulties of an economic and social nature,” including youth unemployment and education, according to Holy See Press Office. (Italy’s youth unemployment rate now stands at a record 44.2%.)

The two also discussed international issues and “shared their serious concerns for the gradual worsening of conflicts in the Middle East,” according to the press office, and both “affirmed the importance of the themes mentioned by the Holy Father during his recent address to the European Parliament in Strasbourg.”
