Learn from the example of St. Lucy, Pope tells the visually impaired
December 15, 2014
In a December 13 audience, Pope Francis called upon members of a non-denominational Italian blind persons’ association to learn from the example of St. Lucy, the patron saint of the visually impaired.
St. Lucy, the Pope said, “was a young woman, helpless, but she faced torture and violent death with great courage.” Blind persons, he continued, should not “assume a victim attitude” but instead imitate her courage.
St. Lucy also was part of a community, the Body of Christ, and made the ultimate gift of self in martyrdom. All of us, he said, are likewise called not to be “monads” and “individualists,” but members of a community who give themselves to others.
