USCCB awards $2.9M to projects in Eastern Europe

December 11, 2014

The Subcommittee on Aid to the Church in Central and Eastern Europe of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has awarded nearly $2.9 million to fund 79 pastoral projects in formerly Communist nations of Europe.

“In these countries, the Church continues to face enormous challenges, both from the recent political upheaval in many areas and from the continuing influence of the secular culture on families, and particularly on the youth,” said Archbishop Blase Cupich of Chicago, the subcommittee’s chairman.

The awards are funded by a collection that is taken up on Ash Wednesday in most dioceses. The subcommittee also awarded nearly $5 million in grants in July.
