US bishops' representative condemns use of torture in interrogations

December 10, 2014

Responding to revelations about interrogation techniques used by the US in the war on terror, the chairman of the US bishops’ committee on justice and peace said that the uses of torture “violated the God-given human dignity inherent in all people and were unequivocally wrong.”

Bishop Oscar Cantu of Los Cruces, New Mexico joined other religious leaders in a condemnation of torture. He issued a reminder: “The Catholic Church firmly believes that torture is an ‘intrinsic evil’ that cannot be justified under any circumstance.”

Well, for once I am in total agreement with the bishops. Since I don't get my views from FOX News and go to the Internet and other sources to get the full story, I am totally opposed to the inhumane treatment of prisoners of wars. Water boarding is torture. We stood in judgment of the Nazis at the Nuremberg trials. Someday the world will judge us by the same standards. The atrocities committed by this nation began with abortion and expanded to wars based on lies.

Well under what definition of torture? This is not a univocal term. The question is whether water-boarding is torture? Various branches of the US military use water-boarding in the training of personnel for difficult missions? Is the US military torturing them? There is mch begging of the question in these torture discussions.
