Listen and treasure God's Word, Pope advises theologians

December 05, 2014

Speaking on December 5 to the members of the International Theological Commission, Pope Francis said that a theologian is “above all, a believer who listens to the living Word of God and welcomes it into his heart and mind.”

Theologians, the Pope continued, should also “listen to what the Spirit tells the Church through the different manifestations of faith lived by the People of God.” Theologians, he said, should work to “hear, distinguish and interpret the many voices of our age, and to judge them in the light of the divine word.”

The Pope said that the increasing diversity of membership in the International Theological Commission—especially the larger number of women—helps to broaden the group’s perspective. He also welcome the international character of the group, saying that “the diversity of points of view must enrich Catholicity without prejudice to unity.”

Pope Francis urged the theologians to look to the Virgin Mary as “a teacher of authentic theology” and a model for their work because as she witnessed the central events of salvation she “treasured all these things, pondering them in her heart.”
