In a message to a family festival in Riva del Garda, Italy, Pope Francis expressed concern about the nation’s demographic future and emphasized his appreciation for the role of women in the family and in society.
Expressing a hope for greater mutual collaboration between families and employers, Pope Francis said that the “worrying demographic trend” calls for an “extraordinary and courageous strategy in favor of families,” which in turn could “initiate an economic revival.”
Noting that some women are “almost crushed” by employment and family responsibilities, the Pope said that women should not be burdened at work with “too heavy a schedule.”
Through their commitment to family life, he added, women offer “an unparalleled contribution to the life and future of society.”
