Pope Francis met with President Armando Guebuza of Mozambique in the Apostolic Palace on December 4.
Guebuza, once a young general in the movement that ended Portuguese colonial rule in 1975, has led the Southeast African nation since 2005.
The Pontiff and the president discussed regional challenges, including poverty and disarmament, as well as the Church’s contribution to healthcare, education, and peace in Mozambique, according to the Holy See Press Office.
The nation of 24.0 million is 24% Catholic.
