New 'popemobile' planned for papal visit to Philippines

December 03, 2014

A new “popemobile” is being designed to transport Pope Francis when he visits the Philippines in January, organizers of the papal trip have announced.

Pope Francis has insisted on traveling in simple cars during other trips abroad, and organizers said that the vehicle would be “nothing flamboyant” and could well be an open car. However the government’s protocol officer, Marciano Paynor, said that some protection was necessary. “He is our visitor and we can’t let anything bad happen to him,” he said.

Organizers declined to provide any further details about the design of the new vehicle.
