Cardinal Parolin speaks on Vatican diplomacy, future of European Union

December 03, 2014

Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican Secretary of State, presided at a Mass on December 3 at the basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, marking the 100th anniversary of the restoration of diplomatic ties between the Holy See and the United Kingdom.

Speaking to Vatican Radio before the Mass, Cardinal Parolin said that the Holy See does not seek to become involved in the politics of other countries, but upholds the right of Church leaders to raise their voices on moral issues. He said that some governments—including the British government—have recognized the value of the Church’s involvement in many public issues, including the quest for peace, the defense of human rights, and the war on poverty.

Questioned about the skepticism about the European Union that has grown notably in Great Britain in recent months, Cardinal Parolin told Vatican Radio that by his visit to Strasbourg last week Pope Francis sought to underline the importance of the European project. He added that the Pontiff wants to reassure young people about the prospects for European unity.
