Catholic group, Palestinian families oppose plan for Israel security wall

December 02, 2014

A Catholic human-rights organization in the Holy Land is forcefully opposing plans by the Israeli defense ministry to build a security wall through land in the Cremisan Valley that includes the properties of two Salesian religious communities, the Fides news service reports.

The Society of St. Yves, which operates under the aegis of the Latin-rite Patriarchate of Jerusalem, told a court hearing that the wall, if it is built, should leave the Salesians’ properties on the Palestinian side. Local Palestinian leaders have also opposed the current plans for the location of the wall, pointing out that it will cut off dozens of families from the lands they have been farming, forcing them to abandon their livelihood.
