Surprise papal visit to ailing Armenian Patriarch

December 01, 2014

Pope Francis made an unscheduled visit to an aged Orthodox prelate as he neared the conclusion of his visit to Turkey on November 30.

Just before boarding his return flight to Rome, the Holy Father went to San Salvatore Armenian hospital in Istanbul to see Armenian Patriarch Mesrob Mutafyan. The Armenian prelate withdrew from public life in 2008, after an announcement that he suffers from Alzheimers disease; his physical health is now reportedly deteriorating badly.
