The proportion of Catholics in the population of Vienna, Austria has been cut nearly in half since 1971, a new survey has found.
In 1971, 79% of Vienna’s people were Catholic. By 2011 that figure had dropped to 41%, and it continues to fall, a study by the Austrian Academy of Sciences found.
Over the same period, the city’s Muslim population jumped from 0.4% of the total to nearly 12%. The number of residents reporting no religious affiliation soared from 10% to 32%.
