Pontiff makes quick trip to Castel Gandolfo

November 17, 2014

Pope Francis made a quick visit to the papal summer residence at Castel Gandolfo on Sunday, November 16.

The Pontiff blessed two sculptures by the Argentine artist Alejandro Marmo, after having lunch with the sculptor and his family. He also met with a group of about 40 visitors from his native Argentina.

On his return trip to the Vatican, the Holy Father stopped at the Clinica Pio XI to visit with another fellow Argentine, Cardinal Jorge Mejia, the retired Vatican archivist, who is hospitalized. Cardinal Mejia, who is 92, has been confined to his home because of frailty for some time.

Pope Francis has made only a few visits to the summer papal residence. Breaking with usual practice, he has chosen to remain in Rome during each of the summers thus far in his pontificate.
