Milan archdiocese apologizes for suggestion to keep tabs on gender-related school programs

November 14, 2014

The Archdiocese of Milan has apologized for a letter suggesting that religion teachers should report on any school programs related to homosexuality or gender issues.

Father Gian Battista Rota, the archdiocesan secretary for education, admitted that his letter had been “formulated in an inappropriate way.” The letter had drawn a heated protest from an Italian cabinet member, Ivan Scalfarotto, who insisted that religion teachers in public schools “must remain secular.”

Scalfarotto, a veteran gay-rights campaigner, charged that the letter from Father Rota seemed to indicate that a religion teacher could be used as “some kind of secret agent or snitch.”

Here we go. If there are religion teachers in the public schools in Italy then they should have a right to be aware of programs that glorify or support homosexuality or gender issues in the school. They should be aware what these programs teach. They have a duty to their students no the secular school.
