Mexican bishops: nation’s future at stake in addressing Iguala mass kidnapping

November 14, 2014

The Mexican Episcopal Conference has issued a statement decrying the kidnapping of 43 students by police, who reportedly handed them over to a drug cartel.

The bishops stated, “We bishops of Mexico say: Enough! We do not want more blood. We do not want more deaths. We do not want more people who disappear. We do not want more pain and even more shame.”

“We join the widespread cry for a Mexico where truth and justice cause a profound transformation of the institutional, legal and political organization, in order to ensure that events like these are not repeated again,” the bishops continued, according to a Fides report.

“We are living a critical moment,” the bishops added. “True democracy that guarantees the strengthening of institutions, law enforcement, education, work, and [the] safety of the new generations, to whom we must not deny a decent future, are at stake.”
