Russian Orthodox prelate calls for independent Orthodox banks

A leading representative of the Orthodox Patriarchate of Moscow has said that Russia’s economy should move toward independence from the world’s banking system, to reduce the pressures from “global centers of hostile influence.”

Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin, speaking to the Russian Entrepreneurs Club, suggested the creation of a new kind of bank, based on the principles of the Orthodox faith. He pointed to examples of financial institutions in the Islamic world, based on Muslim principles.

The Orthodox prelate was addressing concerns raised in Russia because of the impact of economic sanctions imposed by the Western world because of Russia’s armed takeover of the Crimean region.
