National Cathedral to host Muslim prayer service

November 13, 2014

For the first time, the Episcopal Church’s National Cathedral in Washington will host a Muslim prayer service.

The midday Friday prayer service on November 14 is cosponsored by five Muslim groups.

“Leaders believe offering Muslim prayers at the Christian cathedral shows more than hospitality,” the cathedral said in a statement. “It demonstrates an appreciation of one another’s prayer traditions and is a powerful symbolic gesture toward a deeper relationship between the two Abrahamic traditions.”

Choral Evensong in the Anglican tradition is quite lovely. In appreciation of one another’s prayer traditions and to deepen relationship between these two Abrahamic traditions, will the Washington Islamic Center mosque soon be hosting a Christian celebration of Vespers? It's less than a mile and a half away, just down Massachusetts Avenue from the cathedral. I didn't think so.
