Pakistan returns school to Church

November 13, 2014

The Pakistani government has returned a Catholic school to the Archdiocese of Lahore.

In 1972, the socialist regime of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto nationalized Christian schools and hospitals, according to a Fides report. In 2004, President Pervez Musharraf returned most Catholic schools in Lahore, the nation’s 2nd-largest city, to the archdiocese.

Following a decade of requests that culminated in a meeting between Archbishop Sebastian Shaw and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, the final nationalized Catholic school, founded in 1842, was returned to the Archdiocese of Lahore.
