No-photo rule planned for popular basilica in India

November 05, 2014

Church authorities in India are prepared to ban the taking of photographs in the church that houses the relics of St. Francis Xavier.

The basilica of Bom Jesus, in Goa, has become a major tourist attraction. Thousands of visitors tour the building, and regular worshippers have complained that some pose “inappropriately” for pictures.

The basilica already has a dress code, which is enforced by passing out wraps to visitors who are wearing revealing outfits.

The new rules on photography would go into effect as the basilica prepares for an exposition of the relics of St. Francis Xavier, beginning later in November and running through January 2015.
