Argentine Plaza de Mayo grandmother to meet with Pontiff

November 04, 2014

The founder of the Abuelas de la Plaza de Mayo (“Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo”) will meet with Pope Francis on November 4 after the Pontiff’s regular public audience.

Estala de Carlotto founded the Plaza de Mayo group to push for information about children who were born while their mothers were political prisoners under the military dictatorship that ruled Argentina in the late 1970s and early 1980s. She only recently discovered her own grandson, who was identified through a DNA bank the group established. The young man’s mother was killed in prison.
