African cardinal declares week of prayer following military takeover

November 04, 2014

Cardinal Philippe Ouédraogo of Ouagadougou has declared a week of prayer following the sudden resignation of Burkina Faso’s autocratic president and the military takeover of the West African nation.

President Blaise Compaoré, who had ruled the nation since 1987, fled the country after protestors opposed to his bid for another presidential term burned the nation’s legislature. The military then assumed power.

“Daughters and sons of our family the Church of God, I urge you to pray,” said Cardinal Ouédraogo. “Pray for reconciliation, justice and peace in our country.”

The nation of 17.3 million is 61% Muslim and 13% Catholic.
